Botox Q & A

I have forehead wrinkles. Can Botox help?

Yes. Botox is a cosmetic injectable that reduces the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet. It’s made from a safe form of botulinum toxin.

After Botox enters your body, it stops nerve signals from reaching muscles in your face. That causes your muscles to relax, making your skin look smoother and younger.

The Cole Street Dental team uses Botox for medical conditions as well, including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. TMJ is inflammation of the temporomandibular joints  –– two hingelike joints that connect your jaw to your skull.

Where can Botox be injected?

The Cole Street Dental team uses Botox to smooth wrinkles and fine lines on different areas of the face, including:

  • Neck
  • Jawline
  • Chin
  • Lips
  • Eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Nose
  • Eyebrows

You might benefit from Botox injections if you have forehead wrinkles or “bunny lines” — vertical wrinkles that form on the bridge and sides of the nose.

Who can undergo Botox treatment?

Cole Street Dental administers Botox treatment to people 21 and older.

Botox is safe and usually well-tolerated, but it isn’t for everyone. Let your provider know if you take prescription blood thinners or anticoagulants. These drug classes increase the risk of bruising and redness at the injection sites, so you might need to stop taking them before treatment.

What happens during Botox treatment?

At Cole Street Dental, Botox treatment averages 20-30 minutes.

When you arrive at the office, your provider washes your face and applies an antiseptic to your skin. Then, they apply a topical numbing agent.

Your Cole Street Dental provider uses a very thin needle to administer a series of Botox injections into specific areas of your skin. The number of injections you receive depends on your goals and symptoms.

What is recovery like after Botox treatment?

After Botox treatment, you can return to work and other activities on the same day. Don’t rub or apply pressure to the treatment site, and avoid lying down for at least three hours.

If you work out or go to the gym, take at least 24 hours off. Strenuous physical activity increases the risk of swelling and bruising.

How often can I get Botox?

Botox lasts for about 3-4 months. Schedule a follow up at Cole Street Dental when you notice wrinkles starting to form again. After a series of treatments, your muscles train themselves to contract less.
